I try to remember to do Thich Nhat Hanh's practice of half-smiling. It almost always changes my mood.

He says that when you’re walking, sitting or lying down try saying to yourself,

Breathing in, I calm my body, breathing out, I smile.

You can shorten it so when you breathe in, you just say calm to yourself, and when you breathe out, you just say smile.

Calm . . . smile . . . calm . . . smile. . . calm . . . smile . . . .

And when I don't really feel like smiling, I try to imagine smiling inwardly to myself. I see a half-smile in my mind's eye.

And that brings me joy in small ways.
